Betts Risk Group was founded by Michael Betts, who spent eleven years in law enforcement, including supervision and training as a patrol sergeant, before moving into safety and risk leadership.

Police work taught him how to investigate, document, and hold people accountable. Those habits carried straight into safety, where the difference between a program on paper and a program that works comes down to follow-through.

His safety career runs through three regulated environments, and each one added a different piece. But before any of it, he held the wheel himself.

Behind the wheel. Michael drove hazmat tank trucks for a regional carrier, hauling regulated loads under the same hours-of-service, inspection, and placarding rules he now manages for clients.

Time in the seat taught him things no office ever could: how operations actually run day to day, where corners get cut when schedules tighten, and how hard it is for working crews to keep safety a priority when the whole day is built around the next delivery. His programs are written for how work really happens, not how a manual says it should, because he has lived the difference.

Fleet. As a regional safety manager for a national trucking company, he ran and improved the fleet safety program across multiple terminals: camera-based driver coaching, crash review, driver qualification files, and day-to-day DOT compliance.

This is where OSHA and DOT first crossed in his work. The drivers operated under DOT rules, while the on-site repair shops, terminals, and office staff fell under OSHA 1910, and both had to be managed at the same time from the same seat. Under his management the program cut accidents by 60 percent and earned him national coaching recognition from Lytx.

Public transit. As a safety officer for a regional public transportation authority in Central Florida, that dual-regulation work continued and widened.

Transit added a third regulatory body, the Federal Transit Administration, on top of OSHA and DOT, along with occupational health, environmental compliance, and emergency support coordination with the emergency management offices of three counties. He also served as an in-house instructor in active shooter awareness and de-escalation, and built and delivered the organization's first accident and incident training program for first-line supervisors.

Construction. As director of safety for a Central Florida commercial contractor with more than 500 employees and several hundred vehicles, he leads OSHA 1926 compliance, jobsite programs, incident investigation, and fleet safety.

Under his direction the company logged more than one million work hours with zero fatalities, cut fleet speeding exposure by 86 percent, and cut severe and heavy speeding by 97 percent, all during a period of 42 percent fleet growth. Over the same span, the company's fleet safety score climbed from failing to one of the strongest on its telematics platform.

Michael holds the Associate Safety Professional credential through the Board of Certified Safety Professionals and is completing the Certified Safety Professional. He holds a Class A commercial driver license, OSHA 510 in construction standards, the OSHA Safety and Health Fundamentals Certificate through the OSHA Training Institute, and instructor credentials in confined space, rigging, forklift, CPR, and defensive driving. He has a bachelor of science in supply chain and operations management.

Why BRG exists. Most safety providers cover OSHA or DOT, not both.
